Electric heating of the bathroom floor

Electric underfloor heating, installation of heating cable in the bathroom under the tiles and in the shower. Due to the unusual shape of the floor in the presented room, easier to install and cheaper than a heating mat is the heating cable. Watch the video below to the end and see how our PRO RAYCHEM certified installer does it. It is very simple!

Floor heating cables nVent RAYCHEM are the best choice for complex room shapes. During renovation, heating cables can be laid on all typical and stable substrates. They are available in different wattages and in sets with room thermostats that come with a 12-year warranty. In the following video you will see how to properly install the floor sensor.

  • Cable installation time: 50 min
  • Cables will be poured with self-leveling screed: 12 - 15 mm
  • Floor finish: vinyl panels (shower resin compound)
  • Heating kit: nVent RAYCHEM T2Blue-10
  • Heating cable power: 10 W/m
  • Heating power of the set: 300 W
  • Assumed heating power: 120 W/m2
  • Floor area to be heated: 2.3m2
  • Calculated spacing between cables: every 7.5 cm
  • Guide included with heating cable: yes
  • Termostat warranty: 12 years
  1. Determine the heating zone on the floor taking into account permanent buildings and places where holes may be drilled in the floor. When using a 10 W/m heating cable, move min 5 cm away from the walls and min 8 - 10 cm away from the drain under the shower. The cable installed too close to the trap can accelerate the drying of water in it.
  2. Before laying the heating cable, measure the designated zone carefully. With complex shapes of the room, you will do this more easily by dividing the individual areas into rectangles and squares.Divide the resulting area by the length of the selected heating cable and then multiply by 100, obtaining the exact distances between heating cables.
  3. Install the nVent RAYCHEM T2Blue-10 heating set with a 10 W/m floor heating cable. Properly installed T2Blue heating cable is a failure-free system, so the manufacturer, confident in the quality of its products, also vouches for the repair of your floor as part of the warranty. The kit includes:
    • Pipe for installation of the wired temperature sensor in the floor, along with a brass cap and protection.
    • Instructions for installation of the thermostat.
    • Advanced SENZ WIFI thermostat with a 12-year warranty. It comes in a white frame, with an optional anthracite or metallic colored frame available for purchase. It is also possible to match other companies' frame systems.
    • Floor temperature sensor.
    • Hot glue with a higher degree of adhesion.
    • Plates, installation instructions and measurement protocol.
  4. The whole thing is packed in a box with an easy unroll system, which makes cable installation much easier and faster.
  5. Before using the heating cable, take the first electrical measurement. Measure the resistance between the heating wires, the correct value you should get is on the package and on the label stuck to the power cable. Also take a measurement of insulation resistance at 1000V which should be greater than 1000 Mega Ohms.
  6. Prepare the floor sensor tube. Seal one end with the supplied brass cap. Straighten the entire pipe and insert the wire sensor to the very end. Preliminarily at this stage you can insert the pipe into the wall.
  7. In a convenient place on the floor, set the prepared box with the heating cable. Glue it to the floor with hot glue.
  8. Begin the installation of the cable by inserting the power cable toward the thermostat box.
  9. Set up a plan for gluing the heating cable to the floor. From the edge of the designated zone, measure half of the previously calculated distances and start gluing the cable to the floor.
  10. The connection coupler must be in the glue layer, do not bend or change its shape.
  11. The glue gun should be well warmed up, perform this operation with gloves being careful not to burn yourself with hot glue.
  12. It is a good idea to glue the stretched heating cable at its extreme ends first and tighten the middle places in the next stage of installation.
  13. The included adhesive for fixing heating cables has a higher degree of adhesion and is designed for hot installation with a glue gun. The processing time of the glue is about 10 seconds, depending on the size, temperature and thermal conductivity of the material being glued. The adhesive reaches full strength after the glued part has cooled to room temperature.
  14. Do not walk on the cables during installation, if you must do so protect them with OSB, for example.
  15. Mechanical damage to heating cables should be avoided! If the heating cable is damaged, use the manufacturer's dedicated repair kit.
  16. Sensor tube stick it carefully between the heating cables, profile it so that it has the gentlest possible curves.
  17. Installed heating cables you can pour self-leveling screed or spread cement-based mortar over them, always distribute along the heating cores. When doing so, take precautions so that the cables and the covering tube of the floor temperature sensor are not ripped off.
  18. Repeat two measurements, making sure before taping that the cable was not accidentally damaged during installation. Record the results in the acceptance report. The third measurement should be made after sealing the cable.
  19. Make a thorough photographic documentation.
